Home sharing allows to share your iTunes content over the local network with other iOS devices, Macs, Apple TV or any Windows PC with iTunes installed. When Home sharing has been set up, we can stream music\/videos from your source library to all these devices without having to really copy any of those files. Additionally, we can stream music from your Windows PC, as long as you\u2019ve iTunes installed. Before we set up iTunes Home Sharing, confirm you\u2019ve the following elements.<\/p>\n[ad type=”banner”]\n

Pre-requisites<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n
    \n
  1. A Mac, Apple TV, any iOS device or a Windows PC with iTunes installed.<\/li>\n
  2. The devices must be connected to the same local network.<\/li>\n
  3. You\u2019re signed in on all the devices with the same Apple ID.<\/li>\n
  4. The host Mac or Windows should be turned on and iTunes should be opened.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Set up iTunes Home Sharing on Mac or Windows<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

    To enable home sharing on iTunes from your Mac or Windows PC. Open iTunes and click on\u00a0\u201cFile\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0> \u201cHome Sharing<\/strong>\u201d > \u201cTurn on Home Sharing<\/strong>\u201d from the menu bar.<\/p>\n

    \"How<\/p>\n

    sign-in with your\u00a0Apple ID credentials<\/strong>\u00a0and click on \u201cTurn On Home Sharing<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n

    You should see a \u201cHome Sharing is now on<\/strong>\u201d dialogue box similar to as shown below which indicates that you\u2019ve completed the setup on your Mac or Windows.<\/p>\n

    Enable iTunes Home Sharing on iPhone\/iPad<\/p>\n

    On your iOS device, go to \u201cSettings<\/strong>\u201d > \u201cMusic<\/strong>\u201d and tap \u201cSign In<\/strong>\u201d under Home Sharing.<\/p>\n

    Enter your\u00a0Apple ID credentials<\/strong>\u00a0and tap \u201cSign In<\/strong>\u201c. At this stage, you\u2019ve successfully configured your iOS device.<\/p>\n

    \"How<\/p>\n

    Access iTunes Music on iOS<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Now, to access iTunes Music, open the Music app on your iOS device and tap on \u201cHome Sharing<\/strong>\u201c. Your iTunes library should now be displayed.<\/p>\n

    Please note that it may take a few seconds to load it up completely. If you\u2019re unable to see your library, verify that both the devices are\u00a0connected to the same network<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0signed in using the same Apple ID<\/strong>\u00a0and try again.<\/p>\n

    From here, you can\u00a0access all of your songs, playlists, play\/pause music\u00a0<\/strong>that are stored in your Mac or Windows PC. Additionally, You can \u00a0perform certain actions like\u00a0deleting the file from the library, rate the song and like\/dislike it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Access iTunes Videos on iPhone\/iPad<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

    On your iPhone\/iPad, go to \u201cSettings<\/strong>\u201d > \u201cVideos<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cSign in<\/strong>\u201d using your Apple ID.<\/p>\n

    \"How<\/p>\n

    Open the\u00a0Videos<\/strong>\u00a0app and now you must \u00a0see your videos listed under the shared library.<\/p>\n

    \"How<\/p>\n

    Please note that it\u00a0requires videos to be imported<\/strong>\u00a0into iTunes on your source Mac or Windows first. The easiest way of doing this is by dragging videos to the iTunes window.<\/p>\n

    Access iTunes Content on Windows or\u00a0macOS<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

    When you\u2019ve set up iTunes Home Sharing on your Windows or Mac, accessing it on another Windows or Mac is quite easy.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Open iTunes on your other Mac or Windows PC and click on the\u00a0\u201cMusic\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0drop-down menu just below the player controls. You should see your library listed and you can access all the songs from here. If you\u2019re unable to see your library here, verify that both the devices are connected to the same network and try again.<\/p>\n

    \"How<\/p>\n

    An important thing to keep in mind that your shared library will be visible to all the users connected to the same network. If you would like to\u00a0require a password<\/strong>\u00a0before connecting to the library, click on \u201ciTunes<\/strong>\u201d > \u201cPreferences<\/strong>\u201c. Under the sharing tab, check the box where it says \u201cRequire Password<\/strong>\u201d and enter a password and click on\u00a0\u201cOK\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    While you\u2019re at it, here you can also choose to\u00a0share your whole\u00a0library or just individual playlists<\/strong>\u00a0selectively.<\/p>\n

    Access iTunes Content on Apple TV<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

    Even though we did not get a\u00a0chance to try this on an Apple TV, the process must be very straightforward and similar to what we\u2019ve done above.<\/p>\n

    If you\u2019ve 4th gen Apple TV, go to\u00a0Settings<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Accounts<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Home Sharing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    If you\u2019ve an Apple TV prior to 4th gen, go to\u00a0Settings<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Computers<\/strong>. Select the \u201cTurn on Home Sharing<\/strong>\u201d option. Enter the same\u00a0Apple ID credentials<\/strong>\u00a0that you use to set up on iTunes on your Mac or Windows.<\/p>\n

    To access this shared library, go to the\u00a0Main menu<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Computers<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Choose a Library<\/strong>\u00a0and select the shared library.<\/p>\n[ad type=”banner”]\n

    Limitations of iTunes Home Sharing<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

    Home sharing requires all the devices to be connected to the same local network. This implies that it\u00a0cannot be used to remotely access your iTunes library<\/strong>. If you are looking to access iTunes songs remotely, you may want to upload all your music to iCloud, or check out the $25\u00a0iTunes Match<\/a>\u00a0service.<\/p>\n

    Additionally, we can use it with\u00a0up to five computers only<\/strong>\u00a0includes any Mac, Windows, iPhone or iPad.\u00a0This may seem like a lot of devices, but if you have multiple Apple devices, we should easily hit the cap of 5 devices. Also, it requires to\u00a0sign in with the same Apple ID<\/strong>\u00a0on all devices. You\u2019d have to also make sure that your source Mac or Windows is open with iTunes running all the time.<\/p>\n
