The update brings various changes, and stability upgrades, but one of the most essential features that macOS Sierra 10.12.4 brings to Macs, is the Night Shift feature. Already accessible only in iOS devices, and on Macs using third party clients such as f.lux, Night Shift\u00a0in macOS Sierra 10.12.4 finally provides the feature to Apple\u2019s desktop operating system. We\u2019ve tried out the Developer Beta\u00a0for macOS Sierra 10.12.4 on a MacBook Air, and here\u2019s how to use the Night Shift feature on your Mac.<\/p>\n[ad type=”banner”]\n

we must never install beta software on\u00a0your daily driver\u00a0MacBook.\u00a0Additionally, we should take a Time Machine backup of your system before updating it to a beta software, and should take Time Machine backups frequently, while we running the beta software, just in case of an unexpected error.\u00a0Beta software may crash resulting in a loss of data. Please\u00a0update your Mac to a beta version of macOS, if and only if, you know the risks involved.<\/p>\n

Update Your Mac to macOS Sierra 10.12.4<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Since the latest version of macOS Sierra is only available as a developer beta, as of nowadays, you will need to have a\u00a0developer account registered with Apple. If you have a developer account, you can follow the steps below to get macOS Sierra 10.12.4 Developer Beta up and running on your Mac.<\/p>\n

Go to the\u00a0Apple Beta website<\/a>, and\u00a0sign in with your developer account<\/strong>.\u00a0Under the downloads section, you will be able to see \u201cmacOS 10.12.4 beta<\/strong>\u201c. Click on the \u201cDownload<\/strong>\u201d button next to it.<\/p>\n

This will download a small .DMG file on your Mac. Simply\u00a0open this file, and run the installer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve completed the installation, the App Store will automatically launch, and you will be able to see the\u00a0latest developer beta (macOS Sierra 10.12.4)<\/strong>\u00a0available under Updates.<\/p>\n

Simply\u00a0Download the update<\/strong>, and it will be\u00a0installed on your Mac. Your Mac will restart automatically, and will have been updated to macOS Sierra 10.12.4.<\/p>\n

Enable and Use Night Shift in macOS Sierra 10.12.4<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now that we have updated your Mac to the latest iteration of macOS Sierra (10.12.4), we can enable Night Shift by following the steps below:<\/p>\n

Go to\u00a0System Preferences -> Displays<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Here, switch to the tab called \u201cNight Shift<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n

If you want\u00a0Night Shift to automatically toggle on<\/strong>, and off,\u00a0according to sunset, and sunrise, you can click on the dropdown menu next to \u201cSchedule<\/strong>\u201c, and select \u201cSunset to Sunrise<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n

You can also select\u00a0\u201cCustom\u201d,<\/strong>\u00a0in the same dropdown menu, to get the option to\u00a0choose the\u00a0time range<\/strong>\u00a0in which you want Night Shift to be enabled. Night Shift will automatically disable as soon\u00a0as it crosses out of the time range you specified.<\/p>\n

Now that you have enabled Night Shift on your Mac, you can use the\u00a0\u201cColor Temperature\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0slider, to adjust the warmth of your screen when Night Shift is enabled.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Night Shift does not apply to external monitors, or projectors. So, if we can use multiple displays with your Mac, they will not be affected by Night Shift. Only the primary display of your Mac will be affected when Night Shift is turned on.<\/p>\n

Get Night Shift for Mac\u00a0running older version of macOS<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

If you\u00a0have an\u00a0older Mac, that doesn\u2019t support the latest version of macOS, or if you don\u2019t have a developer account, to be able to download the developer beta, you can still use third party apps to get\u00a0a\u00a0Night Shift feature on your Mac.\u00a0I would advise that you use f.lux to get Night Shift on your Mac running an older version of macOS. To get started with f.lux, just follow the steps below:<\/p>\n

Download<\/a>\u00a0f.lux. It will be downloaded as a .ZIP file, which you can extract to get at the f.lux app.<\/p>\n

Once you launch f.lux,\u00a0it will ask you for your location. F.lux uses the GPS to find out your current location, and if it is accurate enough,\u00a0you can simply click on \u201cConfirm<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n

After this, you will be taken to the \u201cPreferences<\/strong>\u201c, where you can\u00a0choose the color temperature for your display, at various times during the day.<\/p>\n

f.lux automatically saves your profile, and\u00a0dynamically adjusts the temperature<\/strong>\u00a0of your Mac\u2019s display based on\u00a0sunset, and sunrise times for your location.<\/p>\n

f.lux is\u00a0by far the best way to get a Night Shift like feature on a Mac running an older version of macOS. The app is completely free, but if you like the developer\u2019s work, I would recommend that you make a donation on their website, to help with the continued development of the app. f.lux is also available for Windows, Android, and iOS devices.<\/p>\n
