run the downloaded setup file<\/strong>.<\/p>\nSTEP 2:<\/label><\/strong><\/p>\nWhen it asks for the default\u00a0download source, choose the option that says \u201cInstall from Internet<\/strong>\u201c, and click on\u00a0\u201cNext\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\nSTEP 3:<\/label><\/strong><\/p>\nPick an installation directory<\/strong>\u00a0for Cygwin, as well as a directory where it will save\u00a0package files for installation of utilities.<\/p>\n
STEP 4:<\/label><\/strong><\/p>\nIn the next screen, you\u2019re required to select your internet connection. If you\u2019re using a Proxy, choose the type of Proxy it is, and fill\u00a0up the details. For most users, though, the choice would be \u201cDirect\u00a0Connection<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\nSTEP 5:<\/label><\/strong><\/p>\nYou will then be shown a\u00a0list of mirrors<\/strong>, choose any of these to download Cygwin. If the download fails, you can try again with a different mirror.<\/p>\n[ad type=”banner”]\nSTEP 6:<\/label><\/strong><\/p>\nIn the next window, search for\u00a0\u201cwget\u201d,<\/strong>\u00a0and click on the\u00a0plus next to<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cweb\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in the list that comes up. Here, the checkbox next to \u201cwget<\/strong>\u201d will be selected automatically. Simply click on\u00a0\u201cNext\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n
STEP 7:<\/label><\/strong><\/p>\nThe next screen will show you the packages\u00a0it needs to download. Just click\u00a0\u201cNext\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\nSTEP 8:<\/label><\/strong><\/p>\nOnce installation is completed, you will be asked if you want to\u00a0create a desktop icon<\/strong>, and\/or\u00a0add an\u00a0entry to the start menu<\/strong>. This is completely a matter\u00a0of personal preference, but I\u2019d suggest you at least add it to the start menu, so you can find it easily.<\/p>\n
Now Wget is installed on your Windows PC. However, you\u2019ll not be able to run it from the command\u00a0prompt. Instead, you\u2019ll have to\u00a0launch the Cygwin Terminal, and use Wget from there<\/strong>.<\/p>\nHow to Use Wget<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\nNow we\u2019ve got Wget up and running on our system then we can use Wget to download files, folders, and even entire websites from the internet.\u00a0Here are a couple of interesting things you can do with Wget on your system.<\/p>\n
Note<\/u><\/strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/strong>If you are using Wget on a MacBook Air running macOS Sierra 10.12.3 beta. However, since the utility we\u2019re using is the same (Wget), the commands will be the same on\u00a0any operating system\u00a0you may be using Wget on.<\/p>\n1. Use Wget to Download Files<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\nYou can use Wget to download files from the internet with ease. Just use the following command<\/p>\n
wget <url><\/code><\/p>\n
\nDownload a File and Save it With a Specific Filename<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\nFiles on servers sometimes have the inexplicable names, and you may want to download the file, and have Wget automatically rename it. To do this, just use the\u00a0following command<\/p>\n
wget -o <output_file.extension> <url_to_download><\/code>\nDownload\u00a0Only Specific Filetypes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\nA web server may be hosting a number of different files. So, what if you only want to download all the PDFs on the server, or maybe all the GIFs then simply use\u00a0the\u00a0following command:<\/p>\n
wget -r -A pdf <url_to_download><\/code><\/p>\n
This particular command\u00a0was put to use by Mark Zuckerberg in his Harvard dorm room, to download all the images with just one command, and build the infamous website \u201cfacesmash.com\u201d.<\/p>\n
wget -r -A jpg, jpeg, png, bmp <url_to_download><\/code><\/p>\n
2. Download Files from Multiple URLs with Wget<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\nIf you need to download files from a number of different locations on the internet. There may be a\u00a0PDF file on url1<\/strong>, an important\u00a0ZIP file on url2<\/strong>, and\u00a0something else in url3<\/strong>. If you used Wget in the traditional method, you\u2019ll have to run it three times. But, there is a much easier way to do this.<\/p>\n\nFirst, create a file with all the URLs\u00a0you need to download data from. Ensure that you\u00a0keep each URL in its own line<\/strong>. Save the file, and make sure you remember the name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\nIn Terminal, use the following command to download files from all of the URLs:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nwget -i <file_name><\/code><\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
where \u201cfile_name<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0is the name of the file you created with all the URLs<\/strong>\u00a0you needed to download stuff from.<\/p>\n3. Download an Entire Website with Wget<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\nIf You can use Wget to download the contents of an entire website. Clearly, if the website is too large, this command will take a lot of time to\u00a0finish. So if you want to use Wget\u00a0to download an entire website,\u00a0just use the following command:<\/p>\n
wget --mirror -p <url> -P .\/LOCAL-DIR WEBSITE-URL<\/code><\/p>\n
This will download the entire website, into\u00a0a folder \u201cLOCAL-DIR<\/strong>\u201d inside your working directory. The files of the website will be stored\u00a0in a folder with the same name as the website.<\/p>\n4. Use Wget as a Web Spider<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\nAdditionally, you can make Wget act like a web crawler or a web spider. This is helpful when you want to\u00a0confirm that the URL for\u00a0the file you want to download is valid<\/strong>. To use Wget as a web spider, and check the validity of URLs, just use the following command:<\/p>\nwget --spider <url><\/code><\/p>\n
This will check if the URL you\u2019ve\u00a0mentioned exists, and you\u2019ll get a response to the results of the check.<\/p>\n

\nNegative Response:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
5. Continue Incomplete Downloads<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\nSometime if you were downloading a file with Wget, but\u00a0for some reason, you had to shut your pc down. The\u00a0next time you\u00a0want to try downloading that same file, Wget can actually\u00a0continue the download<\/strong>. You\u00a0just have to\u00a0ensure you\u2019re in the same folder where you were downloading the file the last time<\/strong>, and then use the following command:<\/p>\nwget -c <url><\/code><\/p>\n
When Wget gets that a part of the file is already present in your system, it will automatically\u00a0continue the download.<\/p>\n
Note<\/u><\/em><\/strong>:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>If the file on the server has been changed since the last time you tried to download it, then\u00a0you shouldn\u2019t use this command, because it will result in a corrupted file that you won\u2019t be able to read.<\/p>\nAlso,\u00a0if the server doesn\u2019t\u00a0allow continued downloads, then Wget will refuse to start the download from scratch.\u00a0If you want to start the download from scratch, first you will have to delete the partially downloaded file from your system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n6. Limit the Download Speed<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\nIn case you\u2019re using Wget to download files, and browsing the internet\u00a0together with it, now you\u2019d possibly not need all of your bandwidth to be used up by Wget. Fortunately, Wget consists of an argument that you can use to\u00a0limit the amount of bandwidth<\/strong>\u00a0that Wget can use for downloading files on your system:<\/p>\nwget --limit-rate=<speed> <url><\/code><\/p>\n
Note<\/u><\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\nRemember that the speed is mentioned in Bytes, and not Bits. So, if you use Wget \u2013limit-rate=20k, it will limit the bandwidth usage to 20 kB, and not 20 kb.<\/p>\n
7. Use Wget to Download Files from FTP Servers<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\nIf you need to download a file from an FTP server, you can use Wget as well. Simply use the\u00a0following command to download files from FTP servers:<\/p>\n
wget <ftp_url><\/code><\/p>\n
\nDownload Files from FTP servers with Login<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\nIF your FTP server requires a login to allow download files, you can simply pass the credentials with Wget, as well. Just use the following command:<\/p>\n
wget --ftp-username=USERNAME --ftp-password=PASSWORD <ftp_url><\/code><\/p>\n
