However, Chrome OS isn\u2019t as functional as compared to other operating systems like Linux. So, if you are someone who loves to tinker, you may have thought about whether you could install another operating system, for example, Ubuntu, on your Chromebook. Thus, here is the way to install Linux on a Chromebook:<\/p>\n[ad type=&#8221;banner&#8221;]\n<h4 id=\"install-ubuntu-on-chromebook-with-crouton\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Install\u00a0Ubuntu on Chromebook with Crouton:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In\u00a0order to\u00a0install Ubuntu on a Chromebook, you will first have to download Crouton. Crouton \u2013 an acronym for \u201cChromium OS Universal Chroot Environment<em>\u201d \u2013\u00a0<\/em>is a bundle of scripts that allow the\u00a0easy installation of Linux systems such as Ubuntu, and\u00a0Debian.\u00a0We will use Crouton to install Ubuntu on our\u00a0Chromebook. Just follow the steps below:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>First, you will have to\u00a0<strong>enable Developer Mode<\/strong>in Chrome OS. You can check out our detailed article on the same.<\/li>\n<li>Once you have enabled Developer Mode on your Chromebook,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/fd3zc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download<\/a>Crouton onto your Chromebook. It will be saved in the \u201cDownloads\u201d directory.<\/li>\n<li>On your Chromebook, press \u201c<strong>Ctrl + Alt + T<\/strong>\u201d to launch the Crosh Terminal. Here, type \u201c<strong>shell<\/strong>\u201c, and hit<strong>Enter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15233\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/1-crosh-shell.png\" alt=\"How to Install Linux on Chromebook (Guide)\" width=\"411\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/1-crosh-shell.png 411w, https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/1-crosh-shell-300x194.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a04. You will now get access to a command line,\u00a0and with the help of this command line, we\u2019ll install Ubuntu on \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 our Chromebook. In the Terminal, type \u201c<strong>sudo sh ~\/Downloads\/crouton -e -t lxde<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15234\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2.-install-lxde-with-crouton.png\" alt=\"How to Install Linux on Chromebook (Guide)\" width=\"591\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2.-install-lxde-with-crouton.png 591w, https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2.-install-lxde-with-crouton-300x171.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/p>\n[ad type=&#8221;banner&#8221;]\n<p><strong><em>Note:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em>Unfortunately, as of this writing, Ubuntu\u2019s XFCE, and Unity\u00a0Desktop Environments aren\u2019t working properly on Chromebooks, which is why I would suggest that you use LXDE\u00a0for the time being.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Once that is done, you will have to wait, while<strong>Crouton downloads Ubuntu<\/strong>for you, and installs it on your Chromebook. This step usually takes quite some time, so be patient.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15235\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/3.-installing-Ubuntu-Chromebook.png\" alt=\"How to Install Linux on Chromebook (Guide)\" width=\"610\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/3.-installing-Ubuntu-Chromebook.png 610w, https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/3.-installing-Ubuntu-Chromebook-300x243.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>When the installation is finished, simply type \u201c<strong>sudo startlxde<\/strong>\u201d to<strong>start the Linux desktop<\/strong>. You will be asked for the<strong>encryption passphrase<\/strong>\u00a0you created while installing Ubuntu, just\u00a0key it in, and you\u2019re ready to go.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15236\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/4.-startlxde.png\" alt=\"How to Install Linux on Chromebook (Guide)\" width=\"411\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/4.-startlxde.png 411w, https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/4.-startlxde-300x179.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"switch-back-to-chrome-os-from-linux\"><span style=\"color: #99cc00;\"><strong>Switch Back to Chrome OS from Linux:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>If you want to get back to Chrome OS from Ubuntu, you can simply\u00a0<strong>log out of Ubuntu<\/strong>\u00a0in the normal way, and you\u2019ll immediately be taken back to Chrome OS.<\/p>\n<p>You can restart Linux, by\u00a0<strong>opening a\u00a0terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T)<\/strong>, and typing \u201c<strong>sudo startlxde<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>You should be able to\u00a0<strong>switch between Linux, and Chrome OS<\/strong>, on the fly, by using\u00a0<strong>Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Forward<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Back (on ARM Chromebooks)<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Ctrl + Alt + Forward<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Ctrl + Alt + Back<\/strong>, followed by\u00a0<strong>Ctrl + Alt + Refresh<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>on Intel Chromebooks<\/strong>), but unfortunately, that didn\u2019t work for me on LXDE on my\u00a0Asus Chromebook Flip.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"linux-on-a-chromebook-the-experience\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Linux on a Chromebook: The Experience:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Ubuntu works extremely well on a Chromebook. However, since the XFCE, and Unity Desktop Environments aren\u2019t working, as yet, you\u2019re stuck with using LXDE \u2013 a Desktop Environment not many people like. The main issue I saw with LXDE, is the way that in the event that you possess a touch empowered Chromebook, similar to the Asus Chromebook Flip, the touch doesn&#8217;t work typically in LXDE, and the UI is a tad too small. However, at least the latter can be fixed by adjusting the screen resolution for Linux.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15237\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/5.-Linux-LXDE-Chromebook-1.png\" alt=\"How to Install Linux on Chromebook (Guide)\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/5.-Linux-LXDE-Chromebook-1.png 640w, https:\/\/www.wikitechy.com\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/5.-Linux-LXDE-Chromebook-1-300x188.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n[ad type=&#8221;banner&#8221;]\n<p>Overall, though, the experience is very smooth, and everything works as\u00a0one would expect. So, if you\u2019re wondering if it\u2019s worth the effort, it kind of is.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"install-linux-on-chromebook-to-unlock-its-potential\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Install Linux on Chromebook to\u00a0Unlock Its Potential:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>You can use this\u00a0method to easily install Linux\/Ubuntu on a Chromebook, and unlock\u00a0its true power.\u00a0When you\u2019re running Linux on a Chromebook, you can install Linux apps in the same way as you would\u00a0install them on a normal Linux computer, by using apt-get. However, if you\u2019re using an ARM\u00a0Chromebook, some apps might not work properly for you.
