There is a great deal of significant players in the virtual assistant field. We have Apple, with Siri; Google, with Google Assistant; Microsoft, with Cortana, and more. Even Sound Hound (the music recognition company) has its own virtual assistant now. While I totally cherish the way that there are such a variety of rivals in a field that is developing quickly, how do we figure out which one is on top? In this article, I\u2019ll put Siri, Google Assistant, and Hound to the test, and see which one admissions the best.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the Weather Like?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

A standout amongst the most widely recognized ways I utilize virtual assistants on my phone, is to check for the weather. So, we should first perceive how these aides handle climate related questions, for both present, past, and future dates.<\/p>\n

1. What\u2019s the Weather Like?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Starting off simple, let\u2019s just ask each of our assistants about the current weather in our location.<\/p>\n

They handled it perfectly, no surprises there.<\/p>\n[ad type=”banner”]\n

2. How about tomorrow in New York?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Let\u2019s take things up a notch, and ask about a future weather prediction in another location.<\/p>\n

The answers were what I was expecting, and each one of them manages to handle the query.<\/p>\n

3. What About Two Months After?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Let\u2019s check if we can get our assistants to tell us about\u00a0weather predictions further into the future.<\/p>\n

\"Siri<\/p>\n

Okay, that was interesting. While Siri can\u2019t access\u00a0future weather updates<\/strong>, it does make up for it by\u00a0displaying the weather for the next 10 days. But, Google Assistant\u00a0gets completely bamboozled and offers me with a web link to\u00a0New York apartments. What?<\/p>\n

4. Did it Rain in New Delhi Three Days Ago?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

While we\u2019re at it, let\u2019s ask about weather in the past, as well.<\/p>\n

\"Siri<\/p>\n

While Siri completely fails<\/strong> to give me weather details, Hound is still able to do it<\/strong> for me. Google Assistant failed<\/strong> as well, but gracefully, by providing me with a web-link<\/strong> where I\u00a0can\u00a0<\/em>find the weather details for\u00a0New Delhi.<\/p>\n

Contextual Queries:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Context based search, and responses are one of the most touted features in most virtual assistants. So, let\u2019s put our three assistants to the test, when it comes to handling context based queries.<\/p>\n

1. What position does Gareth Bale play in?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Let\u2019s first ask each of our assistants about the position that Gareth Bale plays in.<\/p>\n

\"Siri<\/p>\n

Hound apparently doesn\u2019t need to display information in that neat, formatted way that Siri and Google Assistant do.<\/p>\n

2. And What About Cristiano Ronaldo:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Let\u2019s move on to checking if we get any context based responses.<\/p>\n

Once again, Siri and Google Assistant gave the answers<\/strong> I was looking for, but Hound simply came up with some links to places I\u00a0might\u00a0<\/em>get the answers at.<\/p>\n[ad type=”banner”]\n

3. What\u00a0Team Does He Play For?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

I\u2019m now checking to see if they understand that by \u201che\u201d,<\/strong> I mean \u201cCristiano Ronaldo<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n

This time around, Siri has stopped giving results in cards<\/strong>, as well. Google Assistant is still presenting great results, and reading them out. I\u2019ve actually lost hope that Hound<\/strong> will catch up, although the links it is giving are actually the right ones<\/strong>. So,\u00a0points for that, I guess.<\/p>\n

4. When is Their Next Match?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

I want to make it even more complicated, so I\u2019m checking if they understand that \u201ctheir\u201d<\/strong> implies \u201cReal Madrid<\/strong>\u201c. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\"Siri<\/p>\n

Oh, wow! Siri\u2019s result is absolutely out of context<\/strong>; Hound\u2019s result is at least about sports matches (just saying!). However, Google Assistant is on point<\/strong>! I\u2019m loving this! But Siri\u2026 wow! I\u2019m sure it\u2019s not \u201cSiri-us\u201d. Heh.<\/p>\n

Quirks, Wit, and Personality:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

One of the less \u201cimportant\u201d parts about the usefulness of a virtual assistant \u2013 quirks, and wit\u00a0\u2013 do add a human (and fun) element to what\u00a0are otherwise only some really well written\u00a0pieces of code. So, let\u2019s check out some of the fun things these assistants can do (or not do), shall we?<\/p>\n

1. Tell me a Joke<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

For starters, I asked each of the assistants to tell me a joke.<\/p>\n

Well, all of the assistants can crack jokes. Not necessarily good ones, but they can!<\/p>\n

2. Sing me a\u00a0Song<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Let\u2019s see if\u00a0our assistants can sing, then.<\/p>\n

\"Siri<\/p>\n

Siri can sing<\/strong>, although not in tune; Google Assistant sings really well<\/strong>, to be honest. And hound\u2026 well, it tried to be useful<\/strong>, at the very least. Although, let\u2019s not judge it too harshly, after all, singing was not part of their job description.<\/p>\n

3. Recite a Poem<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Let\u2019s see\u00a0whether we have any poets in our virtual assistants!<\/p>\n

In this case, Google Assistant actually read out a poem by Emily Dickinson. That\u2019s awesome. Siri, made it rather funny, and Hound, once again, tried too hard to be useful.<\/p>\n

4. I am Your Father<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Ready for a Star Wars easter egg? Let\u2019s see if our assistants are!<\/p>\n

Another time, while Siri gave a good response, Google Assistant\u2019s was just amazing! Hound, you\u2019re trying too hard, and in all the wrong places. The point is, that Google Assistant, and Siri are both great when it comes to wit, and humour.\u00a0Google Assistant\u2019s voice is very natural<\/strong>, though, and Siri doesn\u2019t even come close.<\/p>\n

Sports Schedules, and Scores<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Another useful thing that one might use a virtual assistant for, is keeping up with the latest in the world of sports.<\/p>\n

1. When is the Next Clippers Game<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

First, let\u2019s ask our assistants about the next game that the Clippers will be playing.<\/p>\n

2. What is their Roster?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Let\u2019s see if we can ask our assistants about the roster for the Clippers.<\/p>\n

3. What are the La Liga standings?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re interested in football (soccer), then you\u00a0might want to use your assistant for information about your favorite leagues. Let\u2019s try asking for the latest La Liga standings<\/strong>, and see how they\u2019re looking.<\/p>\n

Next, I\u2019ll ask each of our assistants about the\u00a0date of the next match that Real\u00a0Madrid will be playing.<\/p>\n

Siri, and Google Assistant, both provide answers in the way most people would expect, however, Hound simply offers results from a web search.<\/p>\n

Siri vs Google Assistant vs Hound: Who Wins?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

One thing is immediately clear from the tests we did. Google Assistant is quite simply the best out of the three<\/strong>. It excels in context based queries, and recognizes speech perfectly, and extremely\u00a0quickly. Siri is good at recognizing speech, but tends to lose context quickly. Hound, on the other hand, is good, and it sure tries its best to compete, but it isn\u2019t quite there, yet.<\/p>\n
