To permanently turn on line numbers in IntelliJ IDEA (and other JetBrains IDEs):<\/p>\n

  1. Go to\u00a0File<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0Settings…<\/b><\/li>\n
  2. Then go to\u00a0Editor<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0General<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0Appearance<\/b>.<\/li>\n
  3. Check the\u00a0Show line numbers<\/b>\u00a0box.<\/li>\n
  4. Click\u00a0Apply<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0OK<\/b>.<\/li>\n
  5. Line numbers are now permanently turned on.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    IntelliJ 14.X Onwards<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n

    From version 14.0 onwards, the path to the setting dialog is slightly different, a\u00a0General<\/b>\u00a0submenu has been added between\u00a0Editor<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Appearance<\/b>\u00a0as shown below<\/p>\n

    IntelliJ 8.1.2 – 13.X<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n

    From IntelliJ 8.1.2 onwards, this option is in\u00a0File | Settings<\/b>1. Within the\u00a0IDE Settings<\/b>\u00a0section of that dialog<\/p>\n

    • On a Mac, these are named\u00a0IntelliJ IDEA | Preferences<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      1. Press shift+shift<\/li>\n
      2. Type “line number”<\/li>\n

        There’s another way,<\/p>\n

        • Simply\u00a0right click<\/b>\u00a0on the place where the line-numbers should be, and there you’ll see a small menu.<\/li>\n
        • then, mark the “Show Line Numbers” option.<\/li>\n
        • Note that this only works on a per-file basis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          In Intellij 13 the layout has changed, the Settings button can only be found in File -> Settings and not in the toolbars, and from there you follow the same steps: Editor -> Appearance -> Show line numbers, or search for Line numbers in the Settings search input.<\/b><\/p>\n

          For <\/b>InteliJ<\/b> IDEA 11.0 and above<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n
