These\u00a0<strong>multitasking<\/strong> features are powerful to use them, but they can be confusing. If you\u2019d rather have that classic iPad single-tasking experience, Apple lets you disable multitasking.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-disable-multitasking-on-ipados-13-or-newer\">How to Disable Multitasking on iPadOS 13 or Newer<\/h2>\n<p>First, launch the \u201cSettings\u201d app. Its icon looks like a set of gears and is located on the first page of your home-screen by default.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-659118 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/launch_settings_ipad.png\" alt=\"Launch Settings App on an iPad\" width=\"650\" height=\"346\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once in Settings, locate \u201cHome Screen &amp; Dock\u201d in the left column and then tap it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-658601 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/homescreen_dock_1.png\" alt=\"Select Home Screen and Dock in Settings\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Locate \u201cMultitasking\u201d on the right side of the screen and select it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-658604 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/select_multitasking.png\" alt=\"Select Multitasking options\" width=\"650\" height=\"437\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll see a list of multitasking options with switches beside them. This is what they do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Allow Multiple Apps:<\/strong>\u00a0This option enables or disables Split View and Slide Over that allows two apps on the screen at the same time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Picture in Picture:<\/strong>\u00a0This option enables or disables the ability to play a video in the corner of the screen while you use other apps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gestures:<\/strong>\u00a0This option enables or disables multitasking gestures, such as launching the app switcher with a single-finger swipe upward from the bottom of the screen, switching apps with four-finger swipes, and returning to the home screen from an app by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-658603 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/multitasking_on.png\" alt=\"iPadOS multitasking features enabled\" width=\"465\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some people keep the Gestures toggle enabled and disable the other two options. That comes down to personal preference.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-658602 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/multitasking_off.png\" alt=\"iPadOS multitasking features disabled\" width=\"456\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-disable-multitasking-on-earlier-versions-of-ios\">How to Disable Multitasking on Earlier Versions of iOS<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re running iOS 9 through iOS 12, you can disable multitasking by following these steps. The settings that control multitasking are located in a different location than the example shown above.<\/p>\n<p>First, Launch the \u201cSettings\u201d app. Navigate to General &gt; Multitasking (this is called \u201cMultitasking &amp; Dock\u201d on iOS 11 and 12). Find the Allow Multiple Apps, Persistent Video Overlay, and Gestures switches and tap each one to turn the features off.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to iOS 9, the iPad operating system did not ship with Split View and Slide Over features.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it!
