Almost every guide to <\/span>apps like Google Classroom<\/span><\/a> is written for teachers. Very few are written for the person who provisions the accounts, syncs the rosters, rotates the API keys, and picks up the phone when a platform goes dark during finals week.<\/span><\/p>\n

That gap matters more than it used to. In 2026, the reasons schools leave Google Classroom stopped being pedagogical and became operational.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two things happened. Google rewrote its education licensing between October 2025 and February 2026, and the free staff license disappeared. Then, in late April, Instructure\u2019s Canvas was breached twice inside nine days \u2013 after which the company permanently discontinued Free-for-Teacher, the exact product that half the \u201cbest alternatives\u201d listicles still recommend today.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are evaluating apps like Google Classroom right now, much of what ranks for this query describes a market that no longer exists. Here is the current one.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why schools are looking for apps like Google Classroom in 2026<\/span><\/h2>\n

Start with a correction, because it drives most of the bad advice in this category: Google Classroom is not the thing that costs money.<\/span><\/p>\n

Classroom ships inside Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals, free for qualifying institutions, with 100 TB of pooled storage. Nobody is leaving over Classroom\u2019s sticker price. They are leaving because of what Fundamentals <\/span>doesn\u2019t<\/span><\/i> do \u2013 roster sync from your SIS, originality reports, security analytics \u2013 and because the tier that fixes that got materially more expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Google actually changed<\/span><\/h3>\n

Three shifts, and the third is the one that hurts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Google raised list prices: Education Plus moved from a suggested $5 to $6 per user per year, the Teaching and Learning add-on from $48 to $60, and flexible plans from $4.80 to $6 per user per month.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the structural change. Under the old model, buying Education Plus or Standard earned you one staff license free for every four paid student licenses. That is gone. Minimum purchase is now the sum of total enrollment \u2013 full <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> part time \u2013 plus every active staff member holding a Fundamentals license. Institutions under 50 combined users must still buy 50.<\/span><\/p>\n

Run the arithmetic on a school with 1,200 students and 140 staff. Previously: 1,200 student licences at $5 covered it and threw in 300 free staff seats \u2013 more than enough for 140 people. Call it $6,000. Now: 1,340 licences at $6 is $8,040. Same school, same software, roughly 34% more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Timing depends on your paperwork, not your calendar: new purchases and downgrades repriced from October 1, 2025; renewals and upgrades from February 1, 2026; Flexible Plan customers no sooner than March 4, 2026. Standard and Plus are annual-commitment only \u2013 cancel mid-term and you owe the balance. One lever: renewing Plus customers increasing licences by 10% may qualify for a 10% first-year discount, available until February 1, 2027.<\/span><\/p>\n

None of that makes Classroom a bad product. It makes the <\/span>upgrade path<\/span><\/i> a budget event \u2013 and budget events are what start migrations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three categories that get collapsed into one list<\/span><\/h2>\n

Most roundups of apps like Google Classroom rank Moodle against ClassDojo. That comparison is meaningless, and it is the single biggest reason schools buy the wrong thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are really three groups. Full learning management systems \u2013 Canvas, Moodle, Brightspace, Blackboard, Schoology \u2013 do gradebooks, assessment engines, LTI tool integration, and SIS roster sync. Productivity suites with a classroom layer \u2013 chiefly Microsoft Teams for Education \u2013 give you an identity tenant and device management with teaching bolted on. K-8 classroom and communication apps \u2013 Seesaw, ClassDojo \u2013 do portfolios and parent messaging, and were never LMSs at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Google Classroom sits between the first two: a thin assignment layer over Workspace, which is why it is so easy to adopt and so limiting at district scale. Replace it with a real LMS and you are not swapping an app \u2013 you are adding a system of record, and everything downstream of it changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Microsoft Student Use Benefit is the sharpest contrast with Google\u2019s new model: licensing faculty on A3 or A5 extends equivalent capability to students at a 40:1 ratio, with no additional per-student charge. Google now requires a paid licence for every active user. For 140 staff and 1,200 students, those two rules produce very different invoices \u2013 and that, not feature parity, usually decides the bake-off.<\/span><\/p>\n

MoodleCloud\u2019s 750-user ceiling ends the conversation for most districts before it starts. Above that you self-host, and self-hosted Moodle is free the way a puppy is free.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Canvas breach reset the risk calculation<\/span><\/h2>\n

The 2026 listicles have not caught up with this, and it should change how you read every row above.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unauthorized actors accessed Canvas systems around April 25, 2026. Instructure detected the intrusion on April 29, revoked access and brought in outside forensics. It disclosed on May 1 and said the incident was contained by May 2 \u2013 usernames, email addresses, student ID numbers and messages between users were involved. Instructure maintains it found no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers or financial data were exposed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then on May 7, the same actor returned through a second vulnerability and defaced login pages. Instructure took Canvas into maintenance mode mid-finals. ShinyHunters claimed data on roughly 275 million people across nearly 9,000 schools \u2013 a figure Instructure has never confirmed. On May 11 the company reached an agreement with the actor; a proposed class action followed on May 13. The University of California ordered campuses to block Canvas; Queensland\u2019s Department of Education, RMIT, 44 Dutch institutions and eight-plus Canadian universities pulled access. The US Department of Education opened FERPA inquiries.<\/span><\/p>\n

The root cause Instructure confirmed publicly: an issue related to Free-for-Teacher accounts \u2013 the no-cost tier living outside enterprise-managed environments. It is now permanently discontinued; former users got an export window during the week of May 28, and Instructure says a replacement is due in the fall.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now hold that next to PowerSchool. In December 2024 an attacker used stolen contractor credentials against PowerSource \u2013 PowerSchool\u2019s support portal, which had no MFA \u2013 and took records for roughly 62 million students and 9.5 million educators. PowerSchool owns Schoology Learning and runs about 75% of the North American K-12 SIS market.<\/span><\/p>\n

Neither breach was a failure of a gradebook. Both came in through the periphery: a free account tier outside enterprise management, and a support portal outside the MFA policy. The LMS you choose matters less than the account and integration surface you attach to it. Any comparison of Google Classroom alternatives that stops at feature checklists is measuring the wrong thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

What actually breaks when you migrate<\/span><\/h2>\n

Every vendor selling apps like Google Classroom scopes the platform itself. Nobody scopes what follows.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Questions to settle before you shortlist anything<\/span><\/h2>\n

Work through these honestly before you take a single demo. If you cannot answer them, you are not ready to choose between apps like Google Classroom \u2013 you are ready to do discovery.<\/span><\/p>\n
