ROMANIA COUNTRY VISA


  • Romania is on track to join the Schengen agreement, so visa requirements are very similar to the Schengen area. If you have a Schengen visa or long stay/resident visa to a Schengen country, you do not need a visa for Romania.

TYPES OF VISAS

The airport transit visa (marked A)

  • Allows the access into and stay in the international area of an airport until boarding the plane to the country of destination;

The transit visa (marked B)

  • Allows access on the territory of Romania, for the purpose of transit, for a duration of at the most 5 days;

The short-stay visa (marked C)

  • Allows entry and a short stay of aliens on the territory of Romania for no more than 90 days within an interval of maximum 6 months from the date of entry (in the case of a multiple-entry visa, the duration of the stay will be taken into account from the date of the first entry). The Romanian short-stay visa is granted for the following purposes: official government mission, tourism, business, private visit, transportation, participation in sports activities, as well as cultural, scientific or academic events. In the case of a holder of a short-stay visa, the stay right cannot be extended.

The long-stay visa (marked D)

  • Allows the entry and stay of aliens on the territory of Romania for a period of 90 days at the most, for the following purposes: economic activities, professional activities, commercial activities (such as investment), religious or humanitarian activities, work, studying, family reunification, as well as research. The right of stay in this case is of 90 days; however, this type of visa allows for its prolongation following an official request addressed to the Romanian Office for Immigration which is part of the Romanian Ministry of Administration and Interior. The requests for the extension of the right of stay must be personally submitted by the applicants, at the local branch-offices of the Romanian Office for Immigration closest to their place of residence, at least 30 days before expiry of the stay right granted by the visa. Overstaying the visa entails cancellation of the visa and the obligation of leaving the territory of Romania.
    • Short-stay and transit visas can be exceptionally granted by border checkpoint officers, at the Romanian border checkpoints, according to the provisions of Council Regulation (EC) 810/2009 of the European Parliament and Council of 13 July 2009 on the issue of establishing a Community Code of Visas (the Visa Code) and of Regulation (EC) no. 562/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council, establishing a Community Code on the rules governing the free movement of persons across borders (Schengen Borders Code) published in the Official Journal of the European Union L/105 of 13 April 2006.
    • The right of stay on the territory of Romania, granted to aliens under a short-stay visa, cannot be extended.
    • The purpose of the trip to Romania undertaken by aliens on the basis of a short-stay visa cannot be altered during their stay on the territory of Romania. The long-stay visa shall only be granted with the approval of the Ministry of Administration and Interior – the Romanian Office for Immigration.
    • Aliens having entered the territory of Romania with a long-stay visa may apply for the extension of the right of temporary residence and obtain a residence permit. The request filed in this respect must be addressed to the Romanian Office for Immigration within the Romanian Ministry of Administration and Interior.
    • All aliens requiring a Romanian visa shall attach to the duly filled-in and signed application form a valid travel document, acknowledged by the state of Romania, to which the visa sticker may applied as well as all the documents required under the law to attest the stated purpose of the trip, the duration of the stay, financial means for the stay, as well as the possibility for the aliens to return to their home country or continue the trip to a third state, upon the end of their stay in Romania.
    • As to the states or territorial authorities that are not acknowledged by Romania, visas shall be granted at request, on uniform forms, regulated by the Government Emergency Ordinance No. 94/2008 on establishing measures regarding the issue of electronic.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR APPLYING VISA:

Tourist Visa

  • Persons wishing to visit India as tourists, or for meeting friends and relatives, will be given six months or less tourist visas. Tourist visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. Double or multiple entry tourist visas should be applied for if the applicants wish to also travel to neighbouring countries and return through India.

Business Visa

  • Business Visa is granted to a foreign national who wants to visit India to establish an industrial/ business venture, to explore possibilities to set up industrial/business venture, to purchase/sell industrial products or visit the Indian offices of their companies for business meetings, setting up facilities, training etc. Non-Romanian/Albanian/Moldovan passport holders may please note that Business visa can be considered in their case only if they have been resident in Romania/Moldova/Albania for the past two years. Proof of such residence as residence permit or work permit and other documents listed below. Registration with Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is required within 14 days of arrival in India if the stay is more than 180 days.

  • Additional form (for Business visa applicants only).
  • A signed letter from the employer in Romania/Albania/Moldova introducing the applicant with details of his designation, passport etc and stating nature of his visit to India, its duration, number of visits envisaged etc. the letter should also give details of the nature of business in which the company is involved.
  • A signed letter of invitation from the Indian entity which the applicant will visit on its letterhead stating the purpose, duration and number of visits for which visa is required.

Journalist Visa

  • Granted to professional journalists, photographers, television and film crew. Visa is granted for a period up to three months. Journalists and photographers are granted only Journalist visa irrespective of the purpose of their visit. Those going on long term residential assignments to India may contact the Embassy for visa application separately.

Documents required:

  • Original Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.
  • One recent Passport size photographs taken against a plain light colored or white background.
  • Visa Application form filled in and signed.
  • Letter from the employer / TV or other Media House stating the purpose of travel.
  • Letter from Indian entity with whom the foreign media will collaborate or use assistance of for the filming.
  • Film crew will be required to furnish a synopsis of the film / documentary or new item they will be filming with the details of places they will visit, seperate letters giving names of crew with their passport details, list of equipment imported into India for the filming, detailed itinerary for the duration of filming etc..
  • Special permits will be required for filming in archaeological, heritage and restricted sites.
  • Any other document(s) as may be required on a case to case basis.

Student Visa

  • Student visas are granted to bona fide students to pursue regular studies at recognized institutions in India and to persons going for studying Yoga, Vedic Culture, Indian systems of dance/music etc at recognized and designated Cultural Institutions. The visa is valid for the period of study as approved by the educational/recognized institutions in India. Registration with Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is required within 14 days of arrival in India if the stay is more than 180 days.
  • Students sponsored by AIESEC for project based work in companies/industries are eligible for business visa and those going for community/social services will be granted entry visa.

Documents required:

  • Original Passport to cover duration of course
  • One recent passport size photograph taken against a plain light colored or white background.
  • Visa Application form filled in and signed.
  • Letter of admission from a recognized Indian educational institution clearly stating the name of the course, its duration and fees charged including (board and lodging) including for courses like yoga, Vedic culture, Indian dance & Music

Conference visa

  • Conference Visas are granted to applicants on production of an invitation to an International conference /seminar/workshop being organized in India by a Ministry or Department of the Government of India; public sector undertaking; central educational institution; public funded universities; organizations owned and controlled by the Government of India/State Government/Union Territory/United Nations or its specialized agencies. The organizers of the conference etc are required to obtain prior clearances from nodal/line Ministry concerned of the Central/state governments, the Central Ministries of Home and External Affairs. These approvals are to be conveyed to the Embassy and to the applicants who should include them with their applications

Medical visa

  • A Medical visa is given for a medical treatment. Duration and number of entries of the visa will depend on the nature of illness and its treatment certified by the Indian consulting doctor. Registration with Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is required within 14 days of arrival in India if the stay is more than 180 days.

Documents required:

  • Original Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.
  • One recent passport size photograph taken against a plain light colored or white background.
  • Visa Application form filled in and signed.
  • Relevant letters signed and stamped from the hospital concerned in India.
  • Medical case history of the patient with recommendations of local doctor attending on the patient.

Medical Attendant visa

  • A Medical Escort visa is given to those who are accompanying a patient. Maximum of two escorts are permitted with a patient. Visa is granted coterminous with the visa of the patient. Registration with Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is required within 14 days of arrival in India if the stay is more than 180 days.

Documents required:

  • Original Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Letter from doctor/hospital certifying the requirement of an attendant.

Research visa

  • Research Visas are granted for Research work for a maximum of three years or for the duration of the research project, whichever is earlier. Registration with Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is required within 14 days of arrival in India if the stay is more than 180 days.

  • Original Passport valid to cover the duration of the research.
  • One recent passport size photograph taken against a plain light colored or white background.

Transfer of visa

  • For transferring a long-term visa from an old passport to a new passport, applicants are required to submit the old passport which holds the valid Indian Visa and the current valid passport. Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

Entry Visa

  • An Entry Visa is given for specific purposes such as Indian origin applicants visiting relatives, voluntary / internship work, or for any other purpose not covered specifically under any of the other visa categories. Registration with Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is required within 14 days of arrival in India if the stay is more than 180 days.

Documents required:

  • Original Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.
  • One recent passport-size photograph taken against a plain light colored or white background.
  • Visa Application form filled in and signed.
  • Invitation letter from the organization/agency based in India and a letter from the concerned institute in Romania/Albania/Moldova for persons going for voluntary work. For student’s letter from their institutions and letter of financial guarantee either from parents or Bank.
  • Applications of children of Indian origin have to be signed by both parents if the children) are to travel alone or with only one parent.

Employment Visa

  • Employment visa is granted to a foreigner to take up an employment in India. Visa is granted for the duration of the employment or to a maximum period of two years whichever is less. Annual salary should not be less than USD 25000 per year. The employment will have to be subject to Income Tax as stipulated by the IT Act of India as applicable. Registration with Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is required within 14 days of arrival in India if the stay is more than 180 days. Employment Visa will be considered only if an Indian Company is authorized by the Government of India to employ foreign nationals and will be only to specialized positions. Employment visa will be accepted at this embassy only from citizens of Romania/Albania/Moldova. Applicants of other nationalities will be accepted if applicant has been resident in one of these three countries for a period of at least two years. If not, they will have to apply for their visa from the Indian Embassy in their country of origin.
  • Foreign nationals who wish to come to India for honorary work (without salary) with NGOs registered in India are granted employment visa for one year duration. However foreign national can draw a monthly remuneration not exceeding Rs. 10000/- for honorary work. Further extension is done by the state governments/Union Territories/Foreigners Regional Registration Office, and Foreigner's Regional Registration Office.
  • In case of change in employer, a fresh employment visa will have to be applied for and obtained from the Indian Mission in their country of origin of the applicant.

  • Proof of employment in the form of detailed employment contract giving detailed terms and conditions of the employment by the company/organization etc. in India, which should be signed by both the employer and the applicant.

Project Visa

  • Project visa is granted to foreign nationals going to India for execution of projects in the power and steel sectors.

Documents required:

  • Original Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.
  • One recent passport-size photograph taken against a plain light colored or white background.
  • Visa Application form duly filled in and signed.
  • Letters from the employers of the applicant and the Indian company offering the employment
  • Employment contract with detailed terms and conditions.

  • Project visa will be accepted at this Embassy only from applicants who are citizens of Romania/Albania/Moldova. Applicants of all other nationalities should apply for their visa from the Indian Mission in their country of origin.

Transit Visa

  • A transit visa is granted to enable applicants to transit through India to destinations in other countries. The visa will be valid for entries within one month of date of issue for a maximum stay of 3 days on each transit. Transit visa is not required if a traveler will be transiting from within the airport. However, a transit visa will be required in case the transit involves clearing and recheck-in of baggage on another airline (as in the case of travel to Nepal, Sri Lanka etc) as this will involve clearing Immigration before proceeding to the departure area for taking the onward flight. Travelers are advised to confirm the requirement with the airline at the time of booking their tickets.
