What is IoT ? | IoT Tutorial

What is IoT (Internet of Things)

  • Internet of Things, refers to the collective network of connected devices and the technology that enables communication between devices and the cloud, as well as between the devices themselves.
  • This means normal devices like vacuums, cars, and machines can use sensors to collect data and reply logically to users.
  • The Internet of Things integrates everyday “things” with the internet.
  • IoT is an advanced automation and analytics system which deals with artificial intelligence, sensor, networking, electronic, cloud messaging etc. to distribute complete systems for the Services or products.
  • The system created by IoT has greater transparency, control, and performance.
IOT
  • As we have a platform such as a cloud that contains all the data via which we connect all the things around us.
  • For example, a house, where we can connect our home appliances such as air conditioner, light, etc. through each other and all these things are achieved at the same platform. Since we have a platform, we can connect our car, track its fuel meter, speed level, and also track the location of the car.

Features of IOT

IOT
  • Connectivity:
    • It refers to create a proper connection between all the things of IoT to IoT platform it may be server or cloud.
    • After connecting the IoT devices, it needs a high-speed messaging between the devices and cloud to enable reliable, secure and bi-directional communication.
  • Analyzing:
    • After connecting all the related things, it comes to real-time analysing the data collected and use them to build real business intelligence.
    • If we have a good vision into data collected from all these things, then we call our system has a smart system.
  • Integrating:
    • IoT integrating the various models to improve the user experience as well.
  • Artificial Intelligence:
    • IoT makes things smart and improves life through the use of data.
  • Sensing:
    • The sensor devices used in IoT technologies detect and measure any change in the environment and report on their status.
    • IoT technology takes passive networks to active networks. Without sensors, there could not hold an effective or true IoT setting.
  • Active Engagement:
    • IoT makes the connected technology, product, or services to active engagement between each other.

How does IoT work ?

A IoT system works through the real-time collection and exchange of data. An IoT system has three components:

IOT
  • Smart devices :
    • This is a device, like a television, security camera, or exercise equipment that has been given computing capabilities.
    • It collects data from its environment, user inputs, or usage patterns and communicates data over the internet to and from its IoT application.
  • IoT application :
    • An IoT application is a collection of services and software that integrates data received from various IoT devices.
    • It uses artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning technology to analyze this data and make informed decisions.
    • These decisions are linked back to the IoT device and the IoT device then responds logically to inputs.
  • A graphical user interface :
    • The IoT device can be managed via graphical user interface. Common examples include a mobile application or website that can be used to register and control smart devices.
  • Save Time:
    • As it reduces the human effort then it definitely saves out time. Time is the primary factor which can save through IoT platform.

What are the benefits of IoT for business ?

  • Increase security
    • Continuous monitoring of digital and physical setup can optimize performance, improve efficiency and reduce safety risks.
    • For example, data collected from an onsite monitor can be shared with hardware and firmware version data to automatically schedule system updates.
  • Scale differentiated solutions
    • IoT technologies can be deployed in a customer focused way to increase satisfaction. For example, trending products can be refilled promptly to avoid shortages.
  • Accelerate innovation
    • The Internet of Things gives businesses access to advanced analytics that uncover new opportunities.
    • For example, businesses can create highly targeted advertising operations by collecting data on customer behavior.
  • Turn data into visions and actions with AI and ML
    • Collected data and historical trends can be used to predict future results.
    • For example, warranty information can be paired with IoT-collected data to predict maintenance incidents.
    • This can be used to proactively provide customer service and build customer loyalty.

What are IoT technologies ?

Technologies used in IoT systems may include:

  • Machine Learning
    • It refers to the software and algorithms used to process data and make real-time decisions based on that data. These machine learning algorithms can be deployed in the cloud or at the edge.
  • Cloud computing
    • Cloud is used for remote data storage and IoT device management – making the data accessible to multiple devices in the network.
  • Edge computing
    • Edge computing refers to the technology used to make smart devices do more than just send or receive data to their IoT platform. It increases the computing power at the edges of an IoT network, reducing communication latency and improving response time.
