Why Network Time Protocol (NTP) Matters So Much.

Admittedly, time is everything in the digital world. Everything you do, whether it is the time of the day on WhatsApp or money sent online, everything is connected to time. That is where Network Time Protocol (NTP) can be used.

I initially heard about NTP when doing a cybersecurity project in college. We were tracking packets with Wireshark on Kali Linux and somebody requested, why do logs have different time stamps on different systems? At that point my mentor threw the hand grenade: proving your time wrong is proving your security analysis wrong. It is at that point that I realized how underestimated NTP is.

What is Network Time Protocol (NTP)?

To use plain terminology, Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a service that coordinates the time of computers and devices on a network.

  • Since the 1980s, it has existed, and was invented by Dr. David L. Mills of the University of Delaware.
  • It communicates on UDP port 123.
  • It is programmed to maintain time at milliseconds- yes milliseconds!

When several devices communicate with each other, say, servers, routers, mobile apps, they must all be in agreement on the clock. Imagine your Instagram messages have reached their destination even before they were written, without NTP. Absolute chaos, right?

How Does Network Time Protocol (NTP) Work?

Here is where it becomes interesting.

  1. Time Servers (Stratum Model) The highest of these is atomic clocks or GPS clocks (Stratum 0). These arrive at correct time to Stratum 1 servers.
  2. Clients (such as your PC or smartphone) -These are devices that are connected to NTP servers to synchronize time.
  3. Four Timestamps – NTP transfers 4 timestamps between the client and the server: when request departed, when server received it, when server sent response, when client received it. NTP determines offset and delay using these.
  4. Clock Adjustments – NTP always brings your system to the correct time, but it does it gradually so that you do not experience any sudden jumps.

The idea of it is to have all the people in a meeting coordinate their watches to have 10:00 AM to all mean the same thing.

I did not value NTP until a time when I was working on a log analysis project. Consider following a hacking attempt and your server log tells you that it occurred at 11:05 AM whereas your firewall log indicates that it occurred at 11:02 AM. Which is correct? It is impossible to know unless both systems are configured with Network Time Protocol.

The following are some real-life locations that NTP is important:

  • Banking & Stock Markets -millions can be lost in a difference of milliseconds.
  • Cybersecurity -Timestamps are important in incident response.
  • Social Media Apps – Every time you see that messages or notifications is a sequence? That’s NTP.
  • Telecom Networks – Calls, 5G towers and IoT devices can not do without NTP.
  • Evidence in the Courtroom Digital timestamps can either make or break a case.

Network Time Protocol (NTP) vs. Other Time Protocols.

You may say: There must be other means of synchronizing time! Yes, but NTP is still king.

  • SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) – A variant of NTP that is more simplified and is used in low-end devices.
  • PTP (Precision Time Protocol) – More so than NTP but in some industry such as telecom.
  • Manual Sync = You can always use your fingers to set the clock, but that is not going to work in terms of maintaining consistency in thousands of systems.

NTP is right on point accurate, scalable and reliable.

My Network Time Protocol Personal Experience 🔐.

In one of my ethical hacking laboratories, we were imitating a brute-force assault. Weirdly, our IDS (Intrusion Detection System) did not indicate the alerts in harmony with the server logs. Initially, I believed that the IDS did not work. I came to know later that the two systems were out of sync with each other since we had not configured NTP synchronisation.

t was a humbling moment. Our experiment was almost destroyed by time mismatch. Ever since, all of my lab setups begin with:

You do not require being a network engineer in order to use NTP. Here are a few tips:

  • On Windows -Install the Windows Time service.
  • On Linux/Mac – syncing with ntpd or chrony.
  • On Routers Router routers have the option of synchronizing to NTP servers.
  • In IoT projects – -Always add an NTP client to make sure that logs are correct.

I went even further to sync my Raspberry Pi to NTP so that I could keep my home automation logs in order.

Time synchronization will be more critical than it has ever been with 5G, IoT, and autonomous vehicles.Although newer and more special purpose protocols such as PTP might increase in popularity, Network Time Protocol (NTP) will be the foundation of the internet time system.

In retrospect I cannot believe how I was so much used to taking time synchronization as a given. Network Time Protocol (NTP) is not a glamorous tool, but it is the mute making our digital world sane.
