Types of Asbestos
  • Asbestos refers to six unique substances that belong to the serpentine and amphibole mineral families:
    1. chrysotile asbestos
      • Most commonly used form of asbestos.
      • asbestos roof - found in roofs, ceilings, walls and floors of homes and business.
      • more exposure to chrysotile develops asbestos cancer.
    2. brown asbestos | amosite asbestos
      • Termed as brown asbestos.
      • asbestos cement - frequently used in cement sheet
      • asbestos pipe – for pipe insulation.
      • It has needle-like asbestos fibers which will create lung cancer

    3. blue asbestos | crocidolite asbestos
      • Termed as blue asbestos,
      • Commonly used to insulate steam engines.
      • Has the least heat resistance.
    4. tremolite asbestos
      • not used commercially,
      • found as a contaminant in chrysotile asbestos and talc powders.
      • rarely found as a contaminant paints, sealants and roofing materials.
      • can be white, green, gray and even transparent.


    5. anthophyllite asbestos
      • displays a gray-brown color.
      • not commercially used.
      • asbestos floor tiles - most commonly found in composite flooring.
    6. Actinolite asbestos
      • has a harsh texture.
      • not as flexible as the other asbestos.
      • often found in metamorphic rock.
      • also found as a contaminant in some asbestos products.
      • never used commercially.
