What is Teen Patti?

Teen Patti (or, if you would prefer, 3 Patti or Three Patti) is a game almost identical to Three Card Poker or Three Card Brag, both of which are popular at land-based and online casinos worldwide.

It comes from South Asia, and it’s traditionally played during celebrations at certain times of the year, including during Diwali and other Hindu celebrations. However, it’s also commonly played in households at other times throughout the year, not just during these periods.

The game has become even more popular in recent years thanks to the independent game development studios and software providers that supply Teen Patti games to licensed online casinos. It’s played with a standard 52-card deck, and the aim is to try and get the best possible three-card hand.

In live dealer Teen Patti, the outcomes/results are NOT produced by RNGs (Random Number Generators), and in regular online casino Teen Patti games, the outcomes/results ARE determined by RNGs.

How to play Teen Patti

If you want to know how to play Teen Patti online in as little time as possible, here are the basics you need to be aware of. When playing online, you only need to beat the dealer, as mentioned, by getting a higher-valued three-card hand.

To begin with, you must add your ante bet to the pot using the player controls. When the ante bet has been placed, the dealer will proceed to deal the cards. Three are dealt face-up to you. Plus, the dealer also gets three cards dealt face-down.

There are now several options, and your next move will be based on the strength of your hand, which is why it’s fundamentally important to learn the different winning Teen Patti hands/ranking order (see further down).

If your hand is rubbish, you can fold, which means you don’t want to put any more money in and get rid of your current hand to start a new round. If you have what you believe is a strong/winnable hand, then you can hit the play button to stay in the game.

If you decide to stay in by clicking or tapping the play button, you will have to pay the same as your initial ante bet. At this point, the dealer’s cards will be revealed to find out who has the stronger hand. If you win, you will be paid accordingly. The only other outcomes are if you lose or tie.

If the game ends in a tie, you will receive your initial stake back. When a round has ended, a new round can begin straight away, and you will find that most rounds don’t ever tend to last more than 20 or 30 seconds, depending on how long people take to make a decision.

What are the Teen Patti hand rankings?

Here is a useful cheat sheet which shows the different winning hands in Teen Patti. We can start with the highest-valued hand (i.e., the best possible hand you could end up with, down to the lowest possible winning hand. They are as follows:

  • The Trail or Set is Teen Patti’s best hand. It’s when you are holding three cards (three-of-a-kind), but they must be of the same rank (e.g., King-King-King, 5-5-5, and so on). The best possible hand would be Ace-Ace-Ace
  • Pure Sequence (which is also referred to as the Straight Flush). It’s Teen Patti’s second strongest hand, where all three cards must be of the same suit AND in consecutive order (e.g., 9-10-Jack of Hearts, or 3-4-5 of Spades, and so on)
  • Sequence/Run (same as a Straight). This third-strongest hand is when you have three cards in a run/consecutive order numerically, but they don’t have to be of the same suit (e.g., 5H-6S-7D, 10C-JackD-QueenH, and so on)
  • Colour (same as Flush). This is any three cards of the exact same suit (e.g., 2-Jack-Ace of diamonds, 4-10-King of hearts, and so on)
  • Pair (same as two-of-a-kind). This is Teen Patti’s second lowest-valued hand, but it wins more often than you would think. It’s when you’re holding two hands of the same rank plus any other card (e.g., Jack-Jack-8, 5-5-7, 2-2-10, and so on).
  • High Card. This is Teen Patti’s weakest hand, but it also wins more times than many people would imagine. The higher the high card, the better. In other words, the Ace is the highest-valued card, and the 2 is the lowest. Therefore, a 5-7-Ace hand would beat a 5-7-Queen hand because of the Ace high card
How do the payouts work in Teen Patti?

The payouts in Teen Patti are relatively straightforward, starting with the biggest payouts. A Straight Flush or better hand usually comes with 5:1 odds, whereas Three-of-a-Kind pays 4:1, and a Straight pays 1:1. If you win because the dealer doesn’t qualify, you would receive a 1:1 payout.

It’s the same payout if you win the hand and the dealer qualifies. If you lose the hand and the dealer qualifies, you won’t receive anything, and if you fold at any time, you won’t receive anything. Finally, if the game ends in a tie, you get your initial ante bet returned.
