What Is The Difference Between LAN, WAN And MAN

LAN, WAN, MAN, 4G, 5G, Fiber optics, what does this all mean? And how do you know which one is best to use for your business or workplace? Read on below to find out which type of business internet setup will help you perform your daily workload without costing you too much cash.

3 Types of Internet Networks

When you are setting up an internet source for your business, one of the important things you will need to consider is what type of network you should use.

An internet network is basically a collection of devices that are connected together through a single signal source. The type of internet network you choose can greatly affect how many devices can access your internet connection as well as how fast the internet signal can reach the connected devices.

Here are the three types of internet networks that you can choose from:

1.LAN

LAN stands for Local Area Network. It is often used by private institutions like schools, offices, hospitals, and colleges. This type of internet network is best for small enclosed locations that require a private internet network because it can be set up with protection from outside devices. The sole owner of the network is the only one who can control the overall security of the internet network.

It can also be set up to gain access and control to the connected devices through the internet connection itself. This means that you will be able to view the contents and/or activities created or performed in a device that is connected to your LAN internet network.

2. MAN

MAN, short for Metropolitan Area Network, works just like a LAN does. The main difference is the distance of the area it can cover.  A MAN can be used to provide internet access to locations as big as small towns or cities. Being so, it is an impractical and expensive internet network connection for businesses.

3. WAN

Last but not the least is WAN or Wide Area Network. This type of internet network can provide internet access to devices across expansive distances as wide as entire countries or continents. This type of internet network is the most expensive since it uses satellite mediums to connect multiple devices over the internet.

What Type of Internet Setup is Best for Business Use?

No internet network would be deemed useful without an internet connection medium. Cable, DSL, and Wireless or Wi-Fi are some internet mediums that may ring a bell. Choosing the right type of internet connection can highly affect how fast your internet connection can be. It can also determine how many devices can fluidly connect to the internet without experiencing any connection lag.

1. Cable and DSL

Cable and DSL internet connections work by providing devices internet access through copper wires. This type of internet connection provides the least speedy internet connection out of all the internet connection types today with only an average speed of 2-megabytes per second. However, even though the majority of the people today use wireless internet, a significant number of people around the world still use cable and DSL connections today.

2. Wireless

Wireless internet is commonly known as Wi-Fi connection. It’s also the most popular choice for business internet. The Wireless internet has become the go-to internet connection for plenty of businesses because of its practicality. At high speeds, wireless internet can help deliver speeds up to 100-megabytes per second. It’s also the least difficult to install at workstations since it doesn’t go with many pieces of wiring. But the best part is, it’s the most compatible with most modern devices today. This means it’s the best option for the utmost productivity.

3. Fiber

If you are running a business that is in need of ultimate high-speed internet the best option for you would be Fiber internet. This type of internet connection is delivered to devices via high-end plastic and glass cables. Having a fiber internet connection can get you internet speeds as fast as 1-gigabyte per second. It’s so fast that you can download a high-resolution full-length movie within a single second!
