Basic Input Output System (BIOS)
- BIOS represent Basic Input Output System. It's built-in software. It's the first software run by the computer once you turned on your computing system.
- This software is typically stored in Read Only Memory (ROM) and located on the motherboard.
- In modern computer systems, the BIOS contents are stored in a flash memory. It's impossible for an operating system to continue without BIOS as it is that the BIOS that loads the drivers of the hard disk and first portions of the OS like MBR, FAT, GPT etc, into the memory to enable the OS to continue loading itself.
- It is also referred to as System BIOS, ROM BIOS, PCBIOS etc.
Two Categories PS/2 Machines
- BIOS was first appeared within the CP/M OS in 1975. The term BIOS was invented by Gary Kildall. IBM classified the system-BIOS in two categories when PS/2 machines were introduced:
- CBIOS stands for Compatibility BIOS . The real-mode portion provided backward compatibility with current operating systems, thus was named CBIOS.
- The ABIOS stands for Advanced BIOS. It provided new interfaces specically the one fitted to multitasking OS.
Functions of BIOS
- The main function of Basic Input Output System (BIOS) is to initialize and test all hardware components attach to the pc and load the part of OS.
- BIOS also provide a medium which facilitates the appliance programs and OS to interact with the keyboard, display and other I/O devices.
- Following may be a list of activities performed by BIOS:
- BIOS handles the facility management and initialize registers.
- It checks and loads the device drivers and interrupts handlers to the RAM.
- It is used to display system settings.
- BIOS specifies the devices that are Bootable.
- BIOS initializes the Bootstrap sequence.

Features of BIOS
- Every BIOS implementation is specifically designed for a specific type of motherboard model or particular computer.
- Originally, BIOS firmware was stored within the ROM memory but nowadays it's stored in flash memory in order that it are often rewritten without removing the chip from the motherboard.
- The other reason for doing this is often that it allows easy updates of BIOS firmware, so new features are often added and bugs are fixed.
- The latest advancement of BIOS is UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface).
- The computer system will gain better compatibility.
- The booting time of system decreases.
- The overall performance of system improves.
- The disadvantage is that it's a time consuming process. BIOS often boots in 16-bit real mode (not 32-bit nor 64-bit protected mode), and since of the kind of chip used, it's not always the fastest.
