Border Road Organization

  • BRO stands for Border Road Organization. It’s a road executive force, an integral a part of the Indian army.
  • Its role mainly involves development and maintenance of road networks within the border areas of India and friendly neighbouring countries.
  • It started its operations in May 1960 with just two projects: Project Tuskar, which was renamed Project Vartak, within the East and Project Beacon within the west.
  • Today, it's a 13-project executive force that has an organized recruiting and training center, well-equipped workshops for overhaul of plant or equipment and Engineer Store Depots for inventory management.
  • The BRO has successfully linked the border areas of north and north-east with other parts of the country.
  • Furthermore, it's also developed the road infrastructure in various states of the country like in Bihar, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh etc.
  • The roads developed by BRO are classified as general staff (GS) roads and these are developed and maintained with the funds provided by the Border Roads Development Board (BRDB), through the Department of Road Transport and Highways.

Mission

    • To support the armed forces in meeting their strategic needs by developing and maintaining the infrastructure.
    • To involve in agency, transnational, and national development projects to optimize potential and expertise.
    • To attain leadership in development, adoption, assimilation and use of state of the art technology
    • To achieve highest level of skill and proficiency in construction activity

Major Functions of the BRO

  • To construct and maintain the General Staff (GS) roads within the border areas as per the defense requirements
  • To execute agency works entrusted by the Central government ministries.
  • To execute work entrusted by public sector undertakings, state governments and other semi-government organizations.
  • Construction of airfields, permanent steel and concrete bridges and accommodation projects.
  • Contribute to the socio-economic development of the Border States.
  • Develop and maintain roads to take care of the line of control through the first sectors and re-deployed sectors.
  • To execute additional tasks as assigned by the govt contributing to the war effort.
